Jožefa is a Slovene feminine form of Joseph, a name with deep biblical roots meaning "he will add" or "may he add," derived from the Hebrew root yasaf meaning "to add, to increase." The name Joseph originates from the Latin Ioseph, which in turn comes from the Greek Ioseph, and ultimately the Hebrew Yosef. In the Old Testament, Joseph is a central figure: the eleventh son of Jacob and the first with his wife Rachel, whose story of being sold into slavery by his brothers but rising to become the pharaoh's advisor is recounted in the Book of Genesis. In the New Testament, Joseph is also the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus, as well as Joseph of Arimathea, who provided the tomb for Jesus' burial.

Jožefa is primarily used in Slovenia, where other forms include the variant Jozefa (without the háček) and the diminuitive Jožica. Another colloquial Slovene diminutive is Pepca.
