Meaning & History

Rafayel is the Armenian form of Raphael, a name derived from the Hebrew Rafaʾel meaning "God heals", from the roots rafa ("to heal") and ʾel ("God"). In Hebrew tradition, Raphael is one of the archangels, best known from the Book of Tobit, where he disguises as the human Azarias and guides Tobias on a journey, ultimately curing Tobias's father Tobit of blindness. Although Raphael is not mentioned in the New Testament, Christian tradition sometimes identifies him with the angel who stirs the water in John 5:4.

While the name Raphael has never been particularly common in English-speaking countries, it has enjoyed consistent use across Europe, notably thanks to the fame of the Italian Renaissance painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), known in English as Raphael. The Armenian form Rafayel (pronounced /ʀa.fa.ˈjɛl/) adapts the name to Armenian phonology and orthography, reflecting the nation's deep Christian heritage and its veneration of angels, which is also expressed through the presence of Raphael in biblical and apocryphal texts.

Rafayel is a masculine given name used primarily in Armenia and among the Armenian diaspora. Related forms include the Dutch Rafaël, the German Raphael, and the shorter Dutch variant Raf. In the biblical tradition, the Greek form Rhaphael and Latin Rafahel appear, while the original Hebrew Rafa'el remains a direct cognate.
