Meaning & History

Raphaël is the French form of Raphael. The name derives from the Hebrew רָפָאֵל (Rafa'el), meaning "God heals," from the roots רָפָא (rafa, "to heal") and אֵל (ʾel, "God").

Etymology and Religious Context

In Hebrew tradition, Raphael is the name of an archangel who appears in the Book of Tobit (a deuterocanonical book of the Old Testament). In the story, Raphael disguises himself as a man named Azarias and accompanies Tobias on a journey to Media, protecting him and eventually healing Tobias's father Tobit of blindness. Though Raphael is not mentioned in the New Testament, Christian tradition often identifies him with the angel who stirred the water at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:4).

Cultural Significance and Notable Bearers

The name Raphael has been widely used in Europe, notably due to the fame of the Italian Renaissance painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), known in English as Raphael. In France, the variant Raphaël has been well-used and has been borne by many notable figures. These include Raphaël Alibert (1887–1963), a French politician; Raphaël Géminiani (1925–2024), a road bicycle racer; Raphaël Ibañez (born 1973), a rugby union footballer; Raphaël Domjan (born 1972), a Swiss explorer; and Raphaël Enthoven (born 1975), a philosopher. The singer Raphaël Haroche (born 1975) is known by the mononym Raphaël.

The name also has a feminine form, Raphaëlle, and cognates in other languages, such as the Dutch Rafaël, the Armenian Rafayel, and the Biblical variations Rhaphael (Greek), Rafa'el (Hebrew), and Rafahel (Latin).
