In Hebrew tradition, Raphael is the name of one of the archangels. He plays a prominent role in the Book of Tobit (a deuterocanonical book of the Old Testament), where he disguises himself as a man named Azarias and accompanies Tobias on a journey, ultimately healing Tobias's father Tobit from blindness.
