Meaning & History

Mariam is a form of the name Maria used in the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) and New Testament. In the New Testament, both this spelling and the variant Μαρία (Maria) appear. The name derives from the Hebrew name Miriam, meaning uncertain but possibly "beloved" or "rebellious." Mariam is also the standard form of Maria in Georgian, Armenian, and Malay, as well as an alternate transcription of Arabic مريم (see Maryam).

Biblical and Religious Significance

As a Greek form of Miriam, Mariam appears in the Old Testament referring to the prophetess Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron. However, its most notable bearer in the New Testament is Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is called Mariam (or Maria) in Greek manuscripts. Because of this, the name has immense importance in Christianity, particularly in Eastern Orthodox where the Greek form is preferred. It is equally revered in Islam, where Maryam (مريم) is the name of the mother of the prophet Isa (Jesus), with the 19th sura of the Quran named after her.

Geographic and Linguistic Distribution

Mariam appears across numerous linguistic traditions. In Armenia and Georgia, it is the most common local form of Mary. Among Malay-speaking Muslims (especially in Malaysia and Indonesia), Mariam is standard alongside Maryam. The name also appears in many European contexts as a variant of Maria, but remains particularly associated with Eastern and Oriental Christianity. Its related forms include diminutives like Marika (Georgian) and variants like Maryam (Arabic) and Meriem (Maghrebi Arabic).

Notable Bearers

  • Mary, mother of Jesus – also known as Saint Mary or the Virgin Mary.
  • Mariam Al-Mansouri – Emirati fighter pilot and first female F-16 pilot in the UAE.
  • Mariam Razma – Australian politician born in Lebanon.
