Meaning & History

Lyonors is a girl's name from Arthurian legend, probably derived from Middle English lyon meaning "lion." It first appears in Sir Thomas Malory's 15th-century compilation, Le Morte d'Arthur, where a woman named Lyonors has a child with King Arthur. In that work, she is distinct from the lady Lyonesse, who is rescued by Sir Gareth. The name and its variant Lionors have been used sporadically in later literature.

Literary Appearances

In Malory's telling, Lyonors is briefly noted as the mother of Arthur's son Borre (or Loholt, depending on the source). The story takes place when Arthur is still a young king, early in his reign. Later, in Alfred Tennyson's 1872 poem Gareth and Lynette, the name is given to the sister of Lynette (the fair maiden who guides Gareth). In Tennyson's version, Lyonors is — contrary to Malory — not the one rescued; that role is played by her sister Lyonesse.

Etymology and Variants

The name's root, Middle English lyon (lion), suggests fierceness or nobility for its bearer. The earliest spellings alternate between Lyonors and Lionors; the spelling lionors may have influenced the character's perception as a lioness. Today, the name remains extremely rare outside fictional works and is chiefly encountered among Arthurian enthusiasts.

French and Further Influence

Though mainly English, some French romances also mention forms like Lyoni or Lionor. In early French versions (before Malory), a character named Leonor or Lyonor appears as the daughter of the King of Cornwall — these are distinct from the Garland story. Overall, the name's presence is skeletal: purely from literature, purely medieval, and never truly popular.
