Meaning & History
Hannie is a Dutch feminine diminutive of Johanna, itself a Latinate form of Greek Ioanna (see Joanna). The name ultimately derives from the Greek Ἰωάννα (Ioanna), the feminine form of Ioannes (see John). Joanna is the spelling used in the English New Testament, where it belongs to a follower of Jesus who is regarded as a saint.
In the Dutch context, Hannie emerged as a pet form of Johanna, particularly common in the Netherlands especially during the 20th century. It fits into a wider pattern of Dutch diminutives formed by adding -ie or similar suffixes to longer names. Similar Dutch variants include Hanna 2, Hanne 1, Hanneke, Jannie, Jennigje, and Johanneke.
It is also attested in Scots English as a dialectal pronunciation spelling of Annie in the Cromarty Fisherfolk dialect, according to the Cromarty Fisherfolk Dialect (2009).
