Elisabeth is a German and Dutch form of Elizabeth, also used as a variant English spelling reflecting the form found in the Authorized Version of the New Testament. The name ultimately derives from the Hebrew name Elisheva (אֱלִישֶׁבַע), meaning "my God is an oath," composed of the elements ʾel (God) and shavaʿ (oath). In the Old Testament, Elisheba was the wife of Aaron. In the New Testament, Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5).
