Meaning & History

Rafael is a masculine given name, used in several languages including Hebrew, German, Hungarian, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovene, and Spanish. It is a form of Raphael, which ultimately derives from the Hebrew name רָפָאֵל (Rafaʾel), meaning "God heals" — from the roots rafa "to heal" and ʾel "God".

Etymology and Religious Significance

In Hebrew tradition, Raphael is the name of one of the archangels. He appears in the Book of Tobit, where he disguises himself as a human named Azarias and accompanies Tobias on his journey, ultimately healing Tobias's father Tobit of blindness. Although Raphael is not mentioned in the New Testament, Christian tradition later identified him with the angel who stirred the water in the pool of Bethesda, as described in John 5:4.

The name has a rich history throughout Europe, especially in Spain and Portugal, where it was popularized by the cult of the archangel. It was also borne by numerous noblemen and figures in Hispanic culture. A famous Italian renaissance painter with a related name is Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), known in English as Raphael.

Notable Bearers

Among the most famous modern bearers is the Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal (born 1986), one of the greatest players in tennis history. In politics, notable figures include Rafael Correa (born 1963), former President of Ecuador, Rafael Eitan (1929–2004), an Israeli general and politician, and Rafael Edward Cruz (born 1970), more commonly known as Ted Cruz, American politician.
