Meaning & History

Dương is a common Vietnamese given name of Sino-Vietnamese origin, linked to two distinct Chinese characters. The first, (dương), means “male, virile” and is associated with yang (the masculine principle in Chinese philosophy). The second, (dương), means “willow,” a graceful tree often depicted in East Asian art and poetry. As a given name, Dương may be bestowed to invoke strength, vitality, or natural beauty.

In Chinese, the same characters are read as Yang (Yang). Dương also has cognates in other East Asian languages. The Japanese kanji for Hiragana are not applicable; Dương has no traditional reading in Japanese, but the element can be read as or haru, while is often read as or yanagi (willow). This cross-linguistic similarity reflects the shared adoption of Chinese characters across Vietnam, China, Korea, and Japan.

Within Vietnam, Dương is also a common surname—an estimated 1% of the population bears this last name. Prominent historical figures with the surname include Dương Đình Nghệ, an administrator of Giao Chỉ around 931 AD, and Dương Vân Nga, the dowager empress of the Đinh dynasty who later married Lê Đại Hành, founder of the Early Lê dynasty. Dương Tam Kha ruled as king briefly (944–950) during the Ngô dynasty, while Dương Nhật Lễ was emperor of Đại Việt from 1369 to 1370.
