Etymology

The name Tausret is composed of three elements: the feminine article tꜣ, the root wsr (meaning "powerful," also found in personal names like Rameses and the dynasty name Ramesside), and the feminine ending t. This construction was typical for royal women of the New Kingdom, emphasizing their divine or official authority.

Historical Significance

Tausret was the final pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty (roughly 12th century BC). According to the historian Manetho, she was called "Thuoris" and was arguably the same person mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as Polybus, husband of Alcandra. However, her actual rule was complex: she began as the Great Royal Wife of Seti II, then served as regent for the young pharaoh Siptah, and later assumed full kingship. Modern scholarship estimates her sole reign lasted only about 3–4 years, but Tausret included Siptah's 6-year reign in her own count, making Manetho's 7-year total synchronize with dynastic memory. Excavations at her mortuary temple at Gournah suggest she had begun a regnal year 9, though her reign's overall duration remains debated.
