Meaning & History
Rida is an Arabic name (Arabic: رضا, romanized: Riḍā) meaning "satisfaction, contentment" or "the fact of being pleased or contented; approval". It derives from the Arabic root riḍan (رِضًا), and theologian Annemarie Schimmel noted its close conceptual link to shukr (thankfulness and gratitude). The name is considered gender-neutral in the Arab world and is used across religious communities, including Arab Christians and Arab Druze.
Religious and Historical Significance
Rida is most famous as the name of Ali ar-Rida (also spelled Ali al-Rida), the eighth Imam in Twelver Shia Islam, who lived in the 9th century. He was given the epithet ar-Riḍā – meaning "the satisfied one" or "the one who is pleased" – well after his life; early Shiʿi sources sometimes referred to him simply as Abu'l-Hasan. The title al-Riḍā
According to Sheikh al-Mufid, the imam avoided oaths, never addressed anyone unpleasantly, and was known for his wisdom and hospitality. His influence extended much later: during the Safavid period (16th–18th centuries), the name Reza (Reza) gained immense popularity in Iran as an honorific name, partly because Shia Safavid rulers promoted the cult of the imams.
Linguistic Variants Across Cultures
The Persian version is Reza; the Turkish form is Rıza; the Azerbaijani version is Rza; and the Urdu form is Raza. In the Arab world itself, the spelling variants include Reda, Ridha, Redha, or even Roda. These variant forms maintain the same root meaning but reflect the phonological adaptations of different languages.
