Meaning & History
Rza is an Azerbaijani masculine given name, derived as a form of the Arabic name Rida (also spelled Reda or Ridha). The root name comes from Arabic riḍā (رضًا), meaning "satisfaction" or "contentment" (related to the Arabic element riḍan). Historically, this name was borne by Ali ar-Rida, a 9th-century Shia imam, giving it significant religious connotations in Islam, particularly within Shia tradition.
In Azerbaijani, the name appears as Rza, which is a direct borrowing from Arabic via Persian. It is one of several regional variants: Persian uses Reza, Turkish uses Rıza, and Urdu uses Raza. All of these share the same etymology. Common surname derivatives in Azerbaijan include Rzayev and Rzayeva.
Note that the name is distinct from the American rapper RZA (born Robert Fitzgerald Diggs), stage name of the Wu-Tang Clan producer, whose moniker was inspired by the Arabic-derived name but is not directly related to the Azerbaijani usage.
