Kannon 1 is the Japanese form of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. In Japan, Kannon (also spelled Kwannon) is one of the most widely venerated Buddhist deities, revered for mercy and protection. The name derives from the Chinese Guanyin, itself originating as a calque of the Sanskrit Avalokitasvara, an earlier name for Avalokiteshvara. While Avalokiteshvara is traditionally depicted as male in Indian Buddhism, in East Asian traditions the bodhisattva assumed a feminine form, and Kannon is generally regarded as female in Japan.
Etymology
The Japanese Kannon comes from Chinese Guanyin, which means “one who observes sounds” — that is, the being who hears and responds to the cries of the suffering. The two kanji characters in Kannon (観音) are read as kan (観, “observe, see”) and non (音, “sound”), preserving the visual meaning of the original Chinese. The name highlights Kannon's attribute of perceiving supplications with unceasing compassion.
Cultural Significance
Kannon is enshrined in innumerable temples throughout Japan, and her iconography is richly varied. She may appear with a thousand arms (Senju Kannon), a horse head (Batō Kannon), or eleven faces (Juichimen Kannon). Each form represents a particular aspect of her compassion, such as healing or protection during travel. The deity's influence pervades Japanese folklore, art, and literature, embodying the merciful ideal in Mahayana Buddhism.
