Meaning & History

Jeni is a variant of Jenny. Like its root forms, Jeni is a feminine given name primarily used in English-speaking countries.

Etymology

The name traces back through Jenny, which originally was a medieval English diminutive of Jane. Jane itself is the medieval English form of Jehanne, an Old French feminine form of Iohannes (see John). By the 17th century, Jane had become the most common feminine form of John, surpassing Joan. In the first half of the 20th century, Joan briefly overtook Jane in popularity in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Since the mid-20th century, Jenny—and by extension Jeni—has also been considered a diminutive of Jennifer.

Notable Bearers

While the specific spelling Jeni is less common, it shares its heritage with well-known bearers of the root names Jane, Jenny, and Jennifer, including novelist Jane Austen, primatologist Jane Goodall, and actress Jane Fonda.

Relationship to Other Names

Jeni is one of many variants of Jenny/Jane, including Janel, Janelle, Janet, Janette, Janey, and Janie. It also relates indirectly to non-English forms such as Shavon (African American) and Guinevere (Arthurian), though these have distinct origins.
