Meaning & History

Jenný is the Icelandic form of Jenny. Jenny itself originated as a medieval English diminutive of Jane, and since the mid-20th century it has been primarily considered a diminutive of Jennifer. The root name Jane is the Medieval English form of Jehanne, an Old French feminine form of Iohannes (see John). Jane became the most common feminine form of John in the 17th century, surpassing Joan, though Joan regained popularity in the early 20th century.

Etymology and Linguistic Form

The Icelandic adaptation Jenný follows typical Nordic patterns of adopting foreign names while adjusting spelling and pronunciation. The name is used as a given name in Iceland and is also recognized in Faroese. In Faroese, the matronymic forms are Jennýarson (son of Jenný) and Jennýardóttir (daughter of Jenný). The Icelandic genitive singular is Jennýjar, following a regular declension pattern for feminine names ending in -ý.

Usage and Popularity

While not among the most common Icelandic names, Jenný has been in use in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Its popularity is modest but persistent, partly due to international influence, as Jenny remains common in other Nordic countries and the English-speaking world.

Notable Bearers

One notable bearer is Jenný Løvström (born 1960), a Faroese footballer who played for the Faroe Islands women's national team.
