Meaning & History

Ismael is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Ishmael, as well as the version used in the Greek Old Testament. The name is derived from the Hebrew Yishmaʿel, meaning "God will hear," from the roots shamaʿ ("to hear") and ʾel ("God").

Etymology and Biblical Context

In the Old Testament, Ishmael (or Yishmaʿel) is the name of the first son of Abraham by Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant. According to Genesis 16:11, an angel told Hagar to name her son Ishmael because God had heard her affliction. Ishmael is traditionally considered the ancestor of the Arab people. The name also appears for a man who assassinated Gedaliah the governor of Judah (2 Kings 25:25). In the New Testament, Ismael is used in Greek versions for the same figures.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The name Ismael has been borne by various figures across cultures. Notable bearers include Ismael Balkhi, an Afghan political activist; Ismael Blanco (born 1983), an Argentine footballer; Ismael Prego, a Spanish YouTuber known as Wismichu; and Ismael Villegas, a Puerto Rican MLB player. The narrator of Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick (1851) famously begins with "Call me Ishmael," using the name of Abraham's outcast son as a symbol of a wanderer or an outsider.

Related Forms

Other linguistic variants include Ismail (Uyghur, Turkish, and broader Muslim usage), Esmail (Persian), and Ismaeel or Isma'il (Arabic). The Azerbaijani form is İsmayıl. These forms are widely used among Muslims to honor the prophet Ismail, identified with the biblical Ishmael.

Distribution

Versions of the name remain popular across Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as in Muslim-majority cultures from Africa to Central Asia.
