Esmaeil is a Persian given name, the alternate transcription of Persian اسماعیل (see Esmail). It is a variant of Esmail, the usual Persian form of Ishmael.

The name ultimately derives from the Hebrew יִשְׁמָעֵאל (Yishmaʿel), meaning 'God will hear', from the roots שָׁמַע (shamaʿ) 'to hear' and אֵל (ʾel) 'God'. According to the Old Testament, Ishmael was the son of Abraham by Hagar, and is considered the traditional ancestor of the Arab people. In Islam, Ishmael (Ismail) is a prophet and an important figure in the construction of the Kaaba. The name Ishmael also appears in the Old Testament as a man who assassinated Gedaliah, the governor of Judah. Later, Herman Melville used it for the narrator in his novel Moby-Dick (1851).
