Meaning & History

I-khavod is the Hebrew form of Ichabod, a name that appears in the Hebrew Bible. The name Ichabod means "no glory" or "the glory has departed" in Hebrew, derived from the roots ʾi (meaning "not") and kavaḏ (meaning "to be glorious"). In the Book of Samuel (1 Samuel 4:21), Ichabod is the grandson of Eli and the son of Phinehas. He was given this name by his mother, who lamented, "The glory has departed from Israel," referring to the capture of the Ark of the Covenant by the Philistines and the deaths of Eli, Phinehas, and his wife.

The original Hebrew spelling includes an 'ayin (ע) followed by a silent letter, often transliterated as 'I-khavod. The name is rarely used today, but its meaning carries a poignant resonance within the biblical narrative.
