Meaning & History
Ruadh is an Irish and Scottish Gaelic byname meaning "red". It is most famously associated with the Scottish outlaw Raibeart Ruadh MacGregor (1671–1734), better known in English as Rob Roy. The byname likely originated as a nickname for individuals with red hair, a common trait in Celtic populations. In Scottish history, the epithet "Ruadh" distinguished the red-haired MacGregor from other bearers of the same given name. The name is also seen in Irish contexts, where it relates to the color red (from Old Irish rúad).
Etymology
Ruadh derives from the Primitive Irish *roudos and the Celtic root *roud-, meaning "red". It is cognate with Welsh rhudd and Gaulish roudos. The name appears in early Irish mythology and genealogies, and it continues to be used in modern times as a byname or given name. The diminutive form Ruadhán (or Rúadán) is also attested in medieval Irish annals.
Notable Bearers
The most famous bearer was Raibeart Ruadh MacGregor, a Scottish Jacobite leader and folk hero. In Scottish folklore, he is celebrated for his brigandry and resistance to government authority. The name also occurs in early Irish records: for instance, three saints named Ruadhán are mentioned in the Martyrology of Oengus the Culdee. A notable High King of Ireland, Eochaid Moy, also bore the epithet Ruadh according to some legends.
Cultural Significance
The colour red has strong symbolic connotations in Gaelic culture, often associated with fiery temperament, battle prowess, or martyrdom (as with Red martyrs in the Irish tradition). Because of this, the name Ruadh was used descriptively rather than nominally, and it survives in the anglicized forms Roy (from Scottish Gaelic ruadh) and (Rowan) or Rowen from older sources. The Irish given name Ruadhán is still in occasional use and relates to characters in early Irish literature, such as Ruadhán of Fermanagh, a satirist who appears in the Lebor na hUidre.
