Meaning & History

Rúadán is the Old Irish form of Ruadhán, a name derived from rúad "red" plus a diminutive suffix, thus meaning "little red one."

Etymology

The name originates from the Old Irish adjective rúad "red", which in modern Irish is rua. The diminutive suffix -án is extremely common in Irish naming, giving names like Ciarán (“little dark one”) and Éanna (“little bird”). Thus Rúadán literally means "little red-haired one" or "little reddish one," likely referring to hair color.

Religious Significance

Rúadán is the name of one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, a group of early Irish saints who studied under Saint Finnian at Clonard. The most famous bearer is Ruadhán of Lorrha (also known as Saint Ruadhán, Saint Rowan, or Saint Rodanus), who lived from the late 5th century to 584 AD. According to tradition, he founded a monastery in Lorrha (Lothra, Co. Tipperary) around 548 AD and served as its abbot, guiding 150 monks. He is said to have been exiled him but returned); another legend is recounted in the Life of Saint Rúadán of Lorrha, where he cursed the men of Tara at his monastic church after the king and bishop sought to convene a smite… Ruadán died on 15 April 584, and his feast day is celebrated on 15 April. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Related Forms

The name has several cognates across Celtic languages: Ruadh in Medieval Scottish; Rowan in Irish and English (likely though the rhyming name); Roy (Scottish) and Rowen (English). In Old Irish, the masculine form was Rúadán, which became modern Irish Ruadhán.

Though rare today, Rúadán retains a strong historical and hagiographical resonance as the name of a foundational Irish saint.
