Meaning & History

Etymology and Biblical Origin

Naomi is a Hebrew name originating from the word נָעַם (naʿam), meaning "to be pleasant." The feminine form נָעֳמִי (Naʿomi) translates as "my pleasantness." In the Old Testament, Naomi is the mother-in-law of Ruth. After her husband and sons died in Moab, she returned to Bethlehem grieving and declared that she should be called Mara (meaning "bitter"), as she felt the Lord had dealt bitterly with her (see Ruth 1:20).

Historical Usage

While Naomi was common among Jewish communities, it was not adopted by English-speaking Christians until after the Protestant Reformation, when biblical names gained popularity. The name entered English usage in the 16th century.
