Meaning & History

Xerxes is the Greek form of the Old Persian name 𐎧𐏁𐎹𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎠 (Xšayarša), which means "ruler over heroes". This name is most famously associated with the 5th-century BC king of the Achaemenid Empire, Xerxes I, son of Darius the Great. Xerxes I is a central figure in the Greco-Persian Wars, remembered for his massive invasion of Greece in 480 BC. Despite initial victories, including the Battle of Thermopylae immortalized in film and literature, his campaign ended in defeat at the naval Battle of Salamis. This event marked a turning point in ancient history, often depicted in works by Herodotus and later dramatized by Aeschylus in his play The Persians.

Etymology

The name Xerxes derives from the Old Persian Xšaya-ṛšā, which is ultimately composed of elements meaning "rule" and "hero," thus bearing a regal and heroic significance. The Greek adaptation, Ξέρξης (Xerxes), became the standard transliteration used in classical sources. In Modern Persian, the name appears as Khashayar, maintaining the original royal connotation.

Historical Bearers

Several ancient rulers besides Xerxes I bore this name:

  • Xerxes II of Persia, who reigned briefly in 424 BC after the death of Artaxerxes I.
  • Xerxes of Sophene, who ruled over Sophene and Commagene in the late 3rd century BC.
  • A 6th-century AD prince and general under the Sasanian Empire.

Related Names

In Semitic contexts, Xerxes is identified with the biblical figure Ahasuerus, who appears in the Book of Esther as the king of Persia (see Ahasuerus). This equation stems from the Hebrew rendering 'Achashwerosh, which is related to the same Persian original. The Biblical connection adds a layer of religious significance: according to biblical tradition, Ahasuerus's Persian queen Esther saved the Jewish community from a genocide plot, celebrated as the Feast of Purim.

Modern Usage

Xerxes remains rare as a given name but persists in modern popular culture and among notable individuals, such as Indian businessman Xerxes Desai and Brazilian musician Xerxes de Oliveira. The name also appears in fiction, including the antagonist Xerxes in South Park and the artificial intelligence XERXES in the video game System Shock 2.
