Meaning & History

Sneferu (also known as Snofru or Soris) was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh and the founder of the Fourth Dynasty during the Old Kingdom period (c. 26th century BC). His name derives from the Egyptian snfr-wj, meaning "(he) has made me beautiful", from snfr "to make beautiful", itself a derivative of nfr "beautiful, good". The full Horus name Ḥr-nb-mꜣꜥt-snfr-wj translates as "Horus, Lord of Maat, has perfected me." The Hellenized form Soris (Koine Greek: Σῶρις) was recorded by the historian Manetho.

Reign and Achievements

Sneferu is noted for his major innovations in pyramid construction. He oversaw the building of at least three pyramids that survive to this day: the Meidum Pyramid (which may have been begun by his predecessor Huni), the Bent Pyramid, and the Red Pyramid at Dahshur — the latter is often considered the first successfully completed true pyramid in Egypt. His reign length is debated; estimates range from 24 years (based on the Turin Canon) to 48 years suggested by Rainer Stadelmann. The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt gives a reign of 2613–2589 BC.

Cultural Significance

Sneferu's prenomen (throne name) was Nebmaat (nb Maat), meaning "Lord of Maat," emphasizing his role as the upholder of cosmic order. As the father of Khufu (Cheops), the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, Sneferu established the Fourth Dynasty's reputation as the great pyramid-building age. His name appears in later Egyptian literature as a idealized wise and beneficent ruler.
