Meaning & History
Moustafa is an alternate transcription of the Arabic name Mustafa (مصطفى), which is also widely romanized as Mostafa or Mustapha. The name is a direct epithet of the Prophet Muhammad, meaning "chosen, selected, appointed, preferred" in Arabic. It is derived from the Arabic root حمد (ḥamida) through the verb iṣṭafā (to choose), which is itself related to the concept of selection or being favored. This deeply religious connotation makes Moustafa a name of honor widely used across the Muslim world.
The name Mustafa, and by extension Moustafa, has been borne by notable historical figures including four Ottoman sultans: Mustafa I (r. 1617–1618, 1622–1623), Mustafa II (r. 1695–1703), Mustafa III (r. 1757–1774), and Mustafa IV (r. 1807–1808). Additionally, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), the founder of modern Turkey, bears the name. In modern times, Moustafa has been the given name of several public figures such as the Egyptian musician Moustafa Amar, the Egyptian footballer Moustafa Reyadh, the filmmaker Moustafa Akkad (transliterated as Moustapha), and the writer and activist Moustafa Bayoumi.
As a variant form derived from the same root as Mustafa, Moustafa is predominantly used across Arabic-speaking countries and populations that employ the French-influenced transliteration (common in North Africa, e.g., Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, and Lebanon). The name also exists in other borrowings across various languages of Muslim-majority regions: e.g., Mostafa in Persian, Bengalee as Mostofa, as Maъruf in Kazakh. The unrelated Bosnian Mujo and Kurdish Mistefa represent even further transmutation. In Quran and Traditions, it retains the aura of the “chosen one” echoing back directly to the epithet
