Meaning & History
Modron is a figure in Welsh mythology and folklore, whose name means "mother." She is best known as the mother of Mabon, a prominent hero in the Welsh tale Culhwch and Olwen. Modron's character likely has earlier origins, derived from a divine prototype: the Gaulish goddess Matrona, whose name means "great mother," from Celtic *mātīr "mother" and the augmentative suffix -on. Matrona was worshiped in Gaul and associated with the River Marne. As the Brittonic form evolved, Modron herself is often interpreted as a mother-goddess figure.
