Meaning & History

Fatimah is a common alternate transcription of Arabic فاطمة (see Fatima), and is the usual spelling in Malay and Indonesian. It is derived from the Arabic root (faṭama) meaning "to abstain" or "to wean."

Historical and Religious Significance

Fatimah bint Muhammad (c. 605–632 CE), known as Fatima al-Zahra' ("the shining one"), was the daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his first wife Khadija. She married Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth caliph of Sunni Islam and the first imam of Shia Islam. Their sons, Hasan and Husayn, are key figures in Islamic history, especially in Shiism. Muhammad is reported to have called Fatimah "the best of the women of all mankind" and she is venerated as an exemplary woman for her piety, patience, and generosity. In Shia tradition, she is often paralleled to Mary, mother of Jesus. Through Fatimah, the Prophet's lineage continued, and she is central to the Islamic veneration of the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the house).

Etymology and Variants

The name's meaning relates to weaning abstinence, possibly linked to protective or nurturing qualities. Arabic variant spellings include Fatema, Fatemah, and the standard Fatima, each representing slight differences in transliteration. In Turkish it appears as Fatma; in Albanian as Fatime; in Azerbaijani as Fatimə; and in Bengali as Fatema. The name remains widely used across the Muslim world, from Central Asia to Southeast Asia, as a tribute to the Prophet's daughter.

Usage

Fatimah is the prevalent form in Malaysia and Indonesia, reflecting localized phonetic preferences. It should be distinguished from homophone names like Fatima bint al-Mundhir, Al-Fatima, the 69th name of Allah, or eponyms like the university; according to an addendum, Fatimah refers primarily to rida and social intimacy named second place. The name appears regularly and remains perennially beloved.
