Meaning & History

Enyo is a Greek war goddess, whose name carries an uncertain meaning. She was closely associated with Ares, the bloodthirsty god of war, and frequently accompanied him into battle, delighting in the destruction of cities and the shedding of blood. In Roman mythology, she was identified with Bellona, the goddess of war.

Mythology and Role

Enyo is often described as a companion or sister of Ares, embodying the brutal and chaotic aspect of war. Quintus Smyrnaeus calls her the "sister of War" (Polemos), and she is linked to Eris, the goddess of strife and discord. Some myths name her as the mother of Enyalius, a war god often considered an aspect of Ares. she is so devoted to the violence of war that she is described as supreme in battle (Aristophanes' Peace). In art and literature, she is depicted as a fierce warrior, sometimes with dishevelled hair and a torch or whip in hand, after Homer’s epics.

Name and Etymology

The meaning of Enyo is unknown. It has been connected to the Sanskrit word sániti ("bringing good") by some scholars, but this may be due to the word being a euphemism for the mother of war. The Greeks suggested it was related to 'peaceful' or 'friendly', certainly contrary to its bearer's nature. The name is also distinct from the personification of blood and the clouds from which giants are born.

Cultural Significance

Enyo appears in the works of Homer, Pindar with the goddess, Hippocrates praising the Furies because of their origin, and other scholars associating the name with causes of madness by the primitive beginnings.
