Meaning & History
Zakariya is an alternate transcription of the Arabic name Zakariyya, which itself is the Arabic form of Zechariah and Zacharias. The name ultimately derives from the Hebrew Zekharya (זְכַרְיָה), meaning "Yahweh remembers" — from the roots zakhar (to remember) and Yah (a shortened form of Yahweh). In the Quran, Zakariya (Zechariah) is revered as a prophet and the father of Yahya (John the Baptist), a story also echoed in the New Testament where Zechariah was struck mute for doubting the angel's announcement of his son's birth.
Historical Bearers
Throughout Islamic history, several notable figures have borne the name Zakariya or its variants. The medieval period saw Zakariyya al-Ansari (1420–1520), a prominent Egyptian historian and Islamic scholar, and Zakariya al-Qazwini (1203–1283), a Persian physician and author of cosmographical works. One of the most famous bearers is Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi (865–925), the Persian physician, philosopher, and alchemist known in the West as Rhazes, whose medical writings were influential for centuries. Baha-ud-din Zakariya (1170–1262), a Sufi saint from what is now Pakistan, is another eminent figure. In the political sphere, Abu Zakariya (1203–1249) founded the Hafsid dynasty in Ifriqiya (modern-day Tunisia) with the title of caliph.
Modern Times
In the modern era, Zakariya (or its variant Zakaria) remains common in many Islamic societies. Notable contemporary individuals include the Kurdish singer Zakaria Abdulla, Palestinian politician Zakaria al-Agha (1942–2025), and Egyptian composer Zakariyya Ahmad (1896–1961). Variant forms such as Zakaria and the full Arabic Zakariyya are used across the Arab world and beyond, while cognates in other languages include Zacharias (Greek), Zachariah and Zachary (English), and Zakhar (Ukrainian).
Cultural Significance
The name's meaning of divine remembrance ties it to a core Judeo-Christian-Islamic virtue: God's faithfulness to His covenant. In Islamic tradition, Zakariya is a model of piety who pleaded for an heir in his old age, leading to the miraculous birth of Yahya. The Biblical Zechariah is also the name of a prophet who authored the Book of Zechariah, making the name particularly resonant in both Jewish and Christian contexts as well.
