Meaning & History

Ramiel is a male angelic name found in Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition, most notably in the apocryphal Book of Enoch. The name is derived from Hebrew elements, possibly from רָעַם (ra'am) meaning "thunder" and אֵל (el) meaning "God," giving it the meaning "thunder of God" or "God has thundered."

Religious Significance

In the Book of Enoch, Ramiel is listed as one of the 200 Watcher angels who descended to Earth and sinned by taking human wives, producing the Nephilim. According to Chapter 6 of 1 Enoch, he is one of the 19 specific Watchers led by Semyazza who rebelled against God. This classification places him among the fallen angels, giving him a negative connotation in some traditions. However, Ramiel is sometimes equated with the holy angel Remiel or Jeremiel, who appears in other apocalyptic literature such as 2 Esdras as a righteous angel.

The confusion between Ramiel and other angelic figures stems from the overlapping roles and similar names in various texts. Jeremiel, for instance, derives from a different Hebrew root meaning "God will have pity" (see Jerahmeel), but some manuscripts treat the names interchangeably.
