Meaning & History
Nestan is a Georgian feminine given name, derived from the first part of the compound name Nestan-Darejan. This latter name was created by the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli for his 12th-century epic The Knight in the Panther's Skin. Rustaveli fashioned Nestan-Darejan from the Persian phrase نیست اندر جهان (nīst andar jahān) meaning 'unlike any other in the world' or 'unique'. In the poem, Nestan-Darejan is a princess beloved by the knight Tariel.
Although the simple form Nestan has no history of widespread use in Persian or Iranian culture—where Nestan is actually a village in West Azerbaijan province, Iran—its adoption in Georgian naming tradition reflects the enduring influence of Rustaveli's masterpiece. The name Nestan therefore carries the literary connotations of beauty, nobility, and uniqueness tied to its epic origin.
Etymology
The name originates from the Persian negation and prepositional phrase nīst andar jahān, literally 'nonexistent in the world', metaphorically meaning 'unequalled'. Rustaveli's coinage was multilingual, combining Persian and possibly Georgian elements. Over time, the clipped form Nestan became an independent given name in Georgia.
Usage in Georgia
As a modern Georgian name, Nestan is predominantly female and stands as a shortened separate form of Nestan-Darejan. Its usage is fairly rare but recognizable due to its famous literary source. The full compound name, however, remains more popular.
