Mihran is an Armenian masculine given name, the local form of the Persian name Mehran. Both ultimately derive from the Old Persian *Mithranah, which is built around the name of the Zoroastrian god Mithra. In modern Persian, the root mehr carries the meanings of "friendship, love, kindness."

Historical Significance: The House of Mihran

A related Middle Persian form of the name, Mihrān, was borne by one of the most influential noble families of the Sasanian Empire — the House of Mihran. This šahrdārān, or ruling house, was one of the Seven Great Houses of Iran and claimed descent from the earlier Parthian Arsacid dynasty. They are first mentioned in a trilingual mid-3rd-century inscription of Shapur I at the Ka'ba-i Zartosht. The family held the hereditary office of margraves (military governorship) of the city of Ray (near modern Tehran) throughout the Sasanian period.

Members of the house became generals in the Roman-Persian wars, frequently mentioned in Greek sources as Μιρράνης (mirranēs), which Procopius recorded as a family title. A major branch of the family, the Mihranids, established a line of kings in Caucasian Albania, and another, the Chosroid dynasty, ruled Kartli (the core region of present-day Georgia). The related Georgian name Mirian 2, used by kings of Iberia, is considered to stem from the same tradition.
