Saint Judoc (sometimes anglicized as Josse) was a seventh-century Breton prince who gave up royal privileges to become a priest and hermit; his cult spread through Brittany and northern France. After the Norman Conquest, Breton settlers carried the name to England, where it became known as Josse or Joyce. Although the masculine form fell out of use in England after the 14th century, it persisted in the Netherlands, where it evolved into variants such as Joost.
