Jam

Jam is the Persian form of the Avestan name 𐬫𐬌𐬨𐬀 (Yima), meaning "twin", cognate with Sanskrit Yama. This name belongs to a mythological king in Persian legend, more commonly known by the epithet Jamshid. Jamshid is a central figure in Persian mythology, described as the fourth king of the world according to Ferdowsi's epic Shahnameh. He is credited with bringing civilization and prosperity to humanity, ruling for 600–700 years before losing his divine grace (farr) due to pride and then being slain by the dragon-king Zahhak.

The name Jam derives from the same Indo-Iranian root as Yama, the Hindu god of death. In the Rigveda, Yama is the first mortal who became the king of the dead, preserving a common Indo-European motif of the "first human" or "twin." In Avestan tradition, Yima is depicted as a primordial king who, like Yama, appears in myths of a golden age followed by decline. The Persian form Jam emerged regularly by phonological changes from Old Iranian *Yama- to Middle Persian *Jam.

Although the mythological king is virtually always referred to as Jamshid in Persian texts, Jam appears as a short form or poetic contraction. The full name Jamshid (meaning "Jam of the sun" or "light-possessing Jam") became far more common. Jam alone is occasionally used as a given name in modern Iran, though it remains rare.

Outside Persian, the etymological family is broad: in Turkish, the variant Cem (pronounced 'jem') is a common masculine given name, and the Pashto name Yama refers to the same mythological figure. Thus Jam represents just one branch of an ancient onomastic tradition.
