During the iconoclastic reign of Emperor Theophilos, Ioannikios became a staunch defender of icon veneration. According to tradition, his prophecies influenced Empress Theodora to restore the veneration of icons after Theophilos's death. He died on November 4, 846, and is venerated in both the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches, with his feast day celebrated on November 4.
