Meaning & History

Ioannes is the Biblical Greek form of the Hebrew name Yoḥanan, which is the source of John. The name means "Yahweh is gracious," from the Hebrew roots yo (referring to God) and ḥanan (to be gracious).

Usage in the New Testament

In the New Testament, the name Ioannes refers to two prominent saints: John the Baptist, the ascetic forerunner of Jesus who baptized him and was later executed by Herod Antipas, and John the Apostle, traditionally considered the author of the fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation. Along with Peter and James, John was part of Jesus' inner circle.

Historical Persistence

The name Ioannes was initially more common among Eastern Christians in the Byzantine Empire. After the First Crusade, it flourished in Western Europe, and in England it became the most common male name from the 13th to the 20th century, given to about a fifth of all English boys during the later Middle Ages. In the United States, it was the top name for boys until 1923.

Notable Bearers

The name has been borne by 21 popes, eight Byzantine emperors, and numerous rulers across Europe, including England, France, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Bulgaria, Russia, and Hungary. Notable examples include the Western Roman emperor Ioannes (r. 423–425), who was a senior civil servant elevated after the death of Honorius but deposed by Theodosius II. Literary and historical figures include the poet John Milton, philosopher John Locke, U.S. president John Adams, poet John Keats, author John Steinbeck, president John F. Kennedy, and musician John Lennon. Related forms include Ioanna (feminine) and other language variants such as Yahya (Arabic) and Yohannes (Amharic).
