Meaning & History

Idriss is an alternate transcription of the Arabic name إدريس (see Idris 1). It is predominantly used in Arabic-speaking countries and among Muslim communities worldwide.

Etymology

The root name Idris possibly means "interpreter" or "teacher" in Arabic, derived from the root (darasa) meaning "to study, to learn". In the Quran, this is the name of an ancient prophet who is traditionally equated with the Hebrew prophet Enoch. Enoch's Hebrew name (Ḥanoḵ) means "dedicated". According to the Old Testament, Enoch was the son of Jared and the father of Methuselah, and is said to have walked with God before being taken away (Genesis 5:22–24). Through its lineage, Idris traceably connects back to Cain, whose Hebrew name possibly means "acquired" and appears in Genesis 4:1 as the first son of Adam and Eve.

History and Attribution

While the Quran cites Idris as a prophet and an exemplary figure of patience and truthfulness, post-Quranic tradition often portrays him as a compiler of sacred knowledge, sometimes credited as the first to write with a pen. His identification with Biblical Enoch received acceptance among early Islamic scholars including Ibn Abbas and later became common in Islamic legend. Some historians also see parallels between Idris and the ancient Mesopotamian figure known in Greek as Hermes Trismegistus, linking him further to gnostic and philosophical traditions.

Variants and Usage

The name appears with several Romanized forms besides Idriss, including the direct Arabic transliteration Idris (via the stricter rendering) and the Maghrebi variant Driss. Turkish names preserve it as İdris. In West Africa it becomes Idrissa and is employed by several ethnic groups across the Sahel.

Notable Bearers

Several notable people have borne the name Idriss. Among them:

  • Idriss Déby (1952–2021), the long-time President of Chad, was a central figure in Chadian politics and fought ethnic tensions linked to the Libyan-backed GUNT coalition as well as successive internal rebellions until his death in 2021 from injuries suffered on the battlefield.
  • Idriss Carlos Kameni (1988) is a Cameroonian football goalkeeper known particularly for his time with La Liga clubs Espanyol and Málaga, and earned over sixty caps for his national team, including World Cup appearances.
One brief user of the name extends also to Idriss (terrorist), allegedly a French‐Canadian alleged member of Al‐Qaeda, though verifiable details open such accounts historically can be contested.
