Meaning & History
Historical and Cultural Significance
Evdokija has been used historically among South Slavic peoples, particularly in Serbia and Macedonia. Notable bearers in medieval history include Teodora-Evdokija (1330–after 1381), daughter of Serbian King Stefan Dečanski and wife of the magnate Dejan, and Jevdokija Balšić (fl. 1411), daughter of Đurađ I Balšić and wife of Esau de' Buondelmonti, ruler of Epirus. Another significant figure is Eudokia Angelina (fl. 1186–1211), known in Serbian sources as Evdokija Anđel, daughter of Byzantine Emperor Alexios III Angelos, who married Stefan the First-Crowned of Serbia. The name also appears in modern times, such as with Evdokija Foteva-Vera (1926–2011), a Macedonian communist from Aegean Macedonia.
Variant Forms and Distribution
Evdokija corresponds to other Slavic variants like Evdokiya in Russian and Bulgarian, and Evdokia in Greek. The Russian vernacular form Avdotya is also related. In Finnish, the diminutive Outi is derived from this namesake. The name remains in use in Macedonia, though it is less common today.
