The name Eudocia is a Latinized form of the Greek name Eudokia (Εὐδοκία), which is derived from the word eudokeo (εὐδοκέω) meaning "to be well pleased, to be satisfied." This verb itself combines eu (εὖ) "good" with dokeo (δοκέω) "to think, to imagine, to suppose." Thus, Eudokia essentially means "good thought" or "good will." The name was especially popular among Byzantine royalty, most notably Saint Eudocia, the wife of the 5th-century emperor Theodosius II.
