The name Etelka was coined by Hungarian writer András Dugonics for the heroine of his 1788 novel Etelka. He likely based it on Etele, a masculine name representing the Hungarian form of Etzel — the medieval German rendering of Attila the Hun used in the Nibelungenlied. This gives Etel an indirect but meaningful connection to the famous Hunnic ruler, transmitted through epic poetry and literary invention.
