Benjamin is a masculine given name derived from the Hebrew בִּנְיָמִין (Binyamin), meaning "son of the south" or "son of the right hand." The name combines the elements ben ("son") and yamin ("right hand, south"). In the Old Testament, Benjamin was the twelfth and youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. His mother originally named him Ben-ʾoni ("son of my sorrow") because she died in childbirth, but Jacob renamed him Benjamin (Genesis 35:18). He became the founder of the Tribe of Benjamin, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
