Meaning & History

Beniamin is the Romanian and Polish form of Benjamin, and is also the form used in the Greek and Latin Bibles. The name derives from the Hebrew Binyamin, meaning "son of the south" or "son of the right hand," from the elements ben ("son") and yamin ("right hand, south"). In the Old Testament, Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, originally named Ben-oni ("son of my sorrow") by his dying mother, but renamed by Jacob (see Genesis 35:18). He became the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the Tribe of Benjamin.

Usage in Poland and Romania

In Poland, Beniamin is a rare but established given name, often chosen for its biblical resonance. The Polish Beniamin retains the original Latin spelling used in the Vulgate. In Romania, Beniamin is also used, sometimes in the abbreviated form Beni. Both countries also use variants such as Benjamin or Benjamín in neighboring cultures, but Beniamin remains distinct in ecclesiastical and traditional contexts.

Biblical and Liturgical Use

The Greek and Latin Bibles—the Septuagint and the Vulgate—transliterate the Hebrew name as Beniamin rather than Benjamin, preserving the earlier phonetic form. This explains why Beniamin appears in older religious texts and is used in Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant liturgical calendars in various languages. The name honors the biblical patriarch whose tribe later joined the Kingdom of Judah.

Notable Bearers

One notable bearer is Beniamin Galstian, a Soviet Armenian general of World War II, after whom the Armenian village of Beniamin (Shirak Province) was renamed in 1945, replacing its earlier name Chlofkhan. The village itself has no direct etymological link to the name, but the naming commemorates the general's heroism.
