Meaning & History

Alkyone is the Ancient Greek form of Alcyone, a name derived from the word alkyón (ἀλκυών), meaning "kingfisher." In Greek mythology, Alkyone (Ἀλκυόνη) was the daughter of Aeolus, the god of the winds, and the wife of Ceyx. The myth of Alkyone and Ceyx tells of their tragic love: after Ceyx died in a shipwreck, Alkyone threw herself into the sea, and the gods, taking pity, transformed the couple into kingfishers. The name also belongs to the brightest star of the Pleiades, a star cluster in the constellation Taurus, each Pleiad being the daughter of Atlas and Pleione.

Etymology

The name Alkyóne originally had a smooth breathing mark, but due to folk etymology associating it with the Greek words háls (ἅλς, "sea") and kyéo (κυέω, "I conceive"), it often acquired a rough breathing, leading to the spelling Halkyóne. This folk etymology also influenced the Latinized spelling Halcyone and the English bird genus name Halcyon. The word alkyón is itself of uncertain origin, possibly pre-Greek and non-Indo-European, but the folk etymology linking it to the sea and conception endured.

Mythological Significance

According to Greek myth, Alkyone and Ceyx angered the god Zeus, perhaps by their pride in their love or by calling each other "Zeus" and "Hera." In retaliation, Zeus sent a storm that drowned Ceyx at sea. Overwhelmed with grief, Alkyone discovered his body and leaped into the waves. Out of compassion, the gods transformed them both into kingfishers. The myth explains the "halcyon days"—the seven days of calm winter weather when the kingfisher was believed to nest on the water, invoking the seaside peace of the transformed lovers.
