Meaning & History
Etymology and Meaning
'Orpa is the Hebrew form of Orpah, a name that means "back of the neck" in Hebrew. This etymology is drawn from the Hebrew noun ‘oreph, referring to the nape of the neck.
Biblical Context
In the Old Testament, specifically in the Book of Ruth, 'Orpa (Orpah) is one of two Moabite daughters-in-law of Naomi. After the death of her husband, she initially accompanies the widowed Naomi toward Bethlehem but, at Naomi's urging, chooses to return to her own people and gods (Ruth 1:8–14). Her decision contrasts with that of her sister-in-law Ruth, who insists on staying with Naomi. 'Orpa's departure ultimately highlights Ruth's renowned loyalty and fidelity.
Literary Interpretations and Usage
Orpah also appears as the name of a cat in the movie Coraline, but in biblical sources she remains a minor but significant figure whose choice serves as a foil to Ruth's devotion. Variants include Orpha (English) and the transliterated 'Orpa.
