Meaning & History

'Avigayil is the biblical Hebrew origin form of the name Abigail, from which many modern variants derive. It is found in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) as the name of a wise and beautiful woman, the wife of Nabal and later of King David. The name is composed of two Hebrew elements: אָב (ʾav) meaning "father" and גִּיל (gil) meaning "joy", thus signifying "my father is joy".

Biblical Narrative

According to the First Book of Samuel (chapter 25), 'Avigayil was married to Nabal, a wealthy but harsh man. When David, then a fugitive from King Saul, sought provisions from Nabal and was rebuffed, 'Avigayil intervened by bringing supplies to David and his men without her husband's knowledge. Her diplomacy and quick action prevented bloodshed. After Nabal's death, David took 'Avigayil as his wife. She became the mother of David's second son, Chileab (also called Daniel). The narrative portrays her as a woman of understanding and beauty.

Cultural and Historical Context

The name 'Avigayil appears in the Hebrew Bible in the form אֲבִיגָיִל (ʾAviḡayil). In the Greek Septuagint, it was rendered as Abigaia, and in Latin as Abigaia or Abigail. The English form Abigail gained popularity after the Protestant Reformation, especially among Puritans who favored biblical names. However, in the 17th century, the name acquired a pejorative connotation as a term for a lady's maid, partly due to the character Abigail in the play The Scornful Lady by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher (1616). This usage caused the name to fall out of fashion until its revival in the 20th century.

Related Forms

Modern English variants include Abbey, Abbi, and Abbie, often used as diminutives. The French form is Abigaïl, and the Greek biblical form is Abigaia. The original Hebrew 'Avigayil remains in use among Hebrew-speaking communities.
