Meaning & History
Tõnu is an Estonian masculine given name, a short form of Tõnis, now used independently. Tõnis itself is the Estonian form of Anthony, which derives from the Roman family name Antonius of unknown Etruscan origin.
Etymology and History
The name Anthony was originally the Roman family name Antonius, famously borne by the 1st-century BC general Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony). It gained widespread Christian usage due to Saint Anthony the Great, a 4th-century Egyptian hermit considered the founder of Christian monasticism, and later Saint Anthony of Padua, a 13th-century Portuguese Franciscan and patron saint of Portugal. In the 17th century, the spelling was often altered to include an 'h', erroneously associating it with the Greek word anthos meaning "flower."
In Estonia, Anthony was adapted as Tõnis, and Tõnu emerged as a common diminutive. Over time, Tõnu gained full independence as a given name, separate from its original function as a nickname.
Notable bearers include Tõnu Aav (1939–2019), an actor; Tõnu Endrekson (born 1979), an Olympic rower; Tõnu Kaljuste (born 1953), a conductor; Tõnu Kark (born 1947), an actor; and many others from diverse fields such as music, politics, and sports.
