Meaning & History

Etymology

Teukros is the Greek form of Teucer, which itself is the Latinized version of the Greek name Τεῦκρος (Teukros). Its origin is uncertain, but it may be related to the Hittite storm god Tarḫunna.

Mythological Background

In Homer's Iliad, Teukros is a Greek hero, the son of King Telamon of Salamis and his second wife Hesione, daughter of King Laomedon of Troy. Through his mother, he is nephew to King Priam of Troy and cousin to Hector and Paris—whom he fought against. A renowned archer, Teukros fights alongside his half-brother Ajax. His skill proves essential during the Trojan War, as he picks off Trojan warriors from behind Ajax's giant shield. At one point, he kills Hector's charioteer, Archeptolemus, but Apollo prevents his arrows from harming Hector.

After the war, Teukros returns to Salamis but is banished by his father for failing to avenge Ajax's death. He then sails to Cyprus and founds a new city, naming it Salamis after his homeland, a legend linking the name to Hellenic expansion in the eastern Mediterranean.

Cultural Significance

The name Teukros appears in historical contexts, notably mentioned by ancient authors like Sophocles in Ajax and Pausanias. It survives in modern Greek usage as a rare classical revival name.
