Meaning & History

Olegarius is the Latinized form of the Germanic name Olegario, which itself derives from elements possibly Aldegar or Odalgar. The root Aldegar comes from the Old German components alt 'old' and ger 'spear', thus meaning 'old spear'. This name is primarily known through the 12th-century saint Olegarius Bonestruga (1060–1137), who served as Bishop of Barcelona and later Archbishop of Tarragona.

Olegarius was a key figure in the ecclesiastical and political life of medieval Catalonia. He was closely associated with Count Ramon Berenguer III of Barcelona, sometimes accompanying him on military campaigns. His tenure saw the restoration of the Archdiocese of Tarragona after its reconquest from Muslim rule, where he became the first archbishop since the city's Christian reconquest. He was canonized in 1675 by Pope Clement X, and his feast day is celebrated on 6 March, the anniversary of his death. His major shrine is located in the side chapel of Christ of Lepanto in Barcelona Cathedral.

Variant forms of Olegarius exist in several Romance languages: Oleguer in Catalan, Olegário in Portuguese, and Olegario in Spanish. While the Germanic original may be obscure, the name's enduring legacy is owed largely to the veneration of the saint and its historical usage in the Iberian Peninsula.
