Meaning & History

Melanie is a feminine given name with roots in Greek, French, and Latin traditions. It derives from the Greek word μέλαινα (melaina), meaning "black, dark," which in Latin became Melania ('blackness'). The name was borne by two early Christian saints: Saint Melania the Elder and her granddaughter Melania the Younger, both Roman aristocrats from the 4th–5th centuries who renounced their wealth for charity. The French form Mélanie was brought to England by the Normans after the Norman Conquest, though it remained rare for centuries.

Usage and Revival

Although Melanie was used in medieval France and England, it gradually faded. Its modern resurgence in English-speaking countries is largely credited to Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel Gone with the Wind and its 1939 film adaptation, which featured the gentle character Melanie Hamilton Wilkes. The name climbed in popularity from the 1930s onward, peaking in the United States in the 1970s. In France, Mélanie also saw widespread use, ranking 86th for girls born in 2004.

Variants and Diminutives

Melanie has many variants across cultures, including Melany, Malani, and Mellony. Diminutives and related forms include Mel, Mindy, Melina, Melinda, and Melantha. In Hungarian, Melinda is a related creation, while the Czech and Slovak forms Melánie and Melánia mirror the French. The name Melaina appears in Greek mythology as well.
