Meaning & History
Gilleasbaig is a masculine given name in the Scottish Gaelic language, best known as the foundation name of Clan Campbell. The name means "servant of the bishop", derived from gille (servant) and easbuig (bishop), the latter taken from the Latin episcopus via Celtic sound changes. As a result, it is etymologically connected to the English word bishop.
History and Use
The earliest recorded bearer, Gilleasbaig of Menstrie (fl. 1260), is considered the founder of Clan Campbell. Despite the direct origin of Gilleasbaig, its Anglicised form Gillespie was frequently rendered as Archibald—a personal name of entirely different etymology (< Arch + bald) that came to be used interchangeably due to phonetic approximation. Many early Campbell Earls of Argyll were named Archibald Gillespie Campbell, cementing this curious equivalence.
